From the CS Intranet: Credit Suisse Employees Take to the Streets to Raise Awareness for Multiple Sclerosis

Last week, Paul Calello (Credit Suisse Investment Banking's CEO) showed his support for Team Credit Suisse by participating in an early morning training ride in the Fitness Center at Eleven Madison Avenue. "This event is such a great fit for Credit Suisse: we have a strong culture of giving generously to important causes - and we are also highly competitive," Calello said. "I am sure I speak for everyone when I say we don't want to surrender our leadership position in Bike MS, but, as with the best things we do, it will take a One Bank effort, so I encourage everyone to join us. Getting involved is good for you, good for the MS Society, and a win for Credit Suisse."

    Team training ride this weekend

A dozen or so intrepid Team CS cyclists braved the blue skies and moderate temperatures yesterday for our first team training ride. From the Central Park starting point we rode through the park, up Riverside Drive, over the George Washington Bridge, and up 9W towards Alpine, Piermont, and Nyack.

Some people met their training goals and turned back in Alpine, while those who continued on were rewarded with coffee and muffins at The Runcible Spoon, a very cycling-friendly bakery in Nyack. The complete Central Park to Runcible round trip was approximately 46 miles. For me, the Brooklyn to Central Park round trip added another 20, but it was a beautiful day to be out.

Hope to see you all again - and some new faces - next Sunday!

Alternative Training rides in NJ this weekend

For those team members living in Mid/Western New Jersey who need a training ride this weekend, one of Team CS (Robin Lauezzari) lead a Sunday Morning Ride for the Cyclecraft Long Valley Ride Group that leaves the Riverside Health Club on Rte 57 in Mansfield NJ at 7am. They do a rolling 25 mile ride. Pace depending on ability of participants - no drops.
In addition Robin also rides with the core Cyclecraft Team on Saturday Morning leaving the Cyclecraft store in Long Valley at 7am- Distance is anywhere between 25 and 40 miles depending on our schedules. Average pace is normally 16/17mph (be warned they cover some pretty decent hills).
Robin would be happy to have interested CS team members join in. Contact him by
email or on his direct line 212 538 4763.

    Thursday evening ride

Another opportunity to ride in Central Park again tonight from 7pm. Darryl will be leading the charge tonight. It will be dark even during the 1st loop so I'd advise lights and as ever a helmet. The roads in the park are closed to traffic after 7pm. Meet at Engineer's gate (90th & 5th). Darryl's steed is a dark blue Trek Madone. Darryl's the rakishly handsome Aussie bloke on it.

    Nightrider (Tuesday training ride)

Corny blog entry I know - but have to keep the flow going some how don't I? Its also getting reasonably dark in the evenings so the blog entry is amost appropriate.

I'll be riding in the park again tonight (Tuesday) from 7pm - meeting at Engineer's gate. Team CS jersey is in the wash following Sunday's training ride so I should be decked out in Red & White "L'Alpe D'Huez" jersey. All invited - no set pace & we'll ride the 6 mile loop 1, 2 or 3 times depending on interest.

    No Training ride this weekend

Unfortunately the training ride scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) will not be going ahead. Darryl, myself and our deputy ride leaders are all out of town. Evening rides in Central Park will continue from Tuesday and the ride next Sunday is on - more details later in the week.

    Rain: riding or not?

As of 4pm this afternoon its still looking a bit wet out there - and training rides were supposed to start this evening! We're not stopping anyone else going out but the 'official' Team CS training ride for tonight is postponed until tomorrow (Weds) - here's looking for better weather...

Let's get training, Part 2: Central park twighlight rides

In addition to the Sunday training rides (see this post below) - We're adding some week-night opportunities to all-comers to put a bit of training in round the 6-mile loop inside Central Park.
I'll be riding most Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting on the 11th up to the week of the MS ride.

The plan is simple: meet at 7pm at Engineer's gate (90th & 5th) & ride the loop 1, 2 or more times depending on personal choice. There will be no set pace, but if there are sufficient takers, we can arrange groups ad hoc.

The evenings are drawing in so its likely to get dark during the ride - I recommend lights on your bike and obviously a helmet.

Look for me (or another team CS member) in the blue & yellow Credit Suisse jersey from last year's ride.

Let's get training, Part 1: the weekends...

5 weeks to the ride - its time to consider some training rides. Team CS has always been the vanguard team in the MS Ride in terms of preparing everyone for the challenge of 30, 60 or 100 miles. The 100 milers are going to burn as many calories as a marathon runner, so we'd better get a bit of practice in, eh?

Our rides are open to anyone in the team (indeed anyone at all) but we recommend the weekend rides for the 60 & 100 milers as we tend to cover a fair distance on those rides.

On each ride we'll have 2 groups. The "pace" group will be riding at around 18-20mph, whereas the "survivor" group will be riding at 14-15mph. Distance will be adjusted so the training rides will be between 3 & 4 hours. Each group will have a leader who knows the route and will adjust the tempo to keep the group together as best as possible, so all you'll need is yourself and your bike.
    Proposed schedule (Distances approx):
    • 9/16 - 9am Engineer's Gate of Central Park (90th & 5th): 9:30am West side of GWB in Fort Lee (Hudson Terrace) - Pace group 50 miles; Survivor group 40 miles

    • 9/23 - 9am Engineer's Gate of Central Park (90th & 5th): 9:30am West side of GWB in Fort Lee (Hudson Terrace) - Pace group 57 miles; Survivor group 45 miles

    • 9/30 - 9am Engineer's Gate of Central Park (90th & 5th): 9:30am West side of GWB in Fort Lee (Hudson Terrace) - Pace group 65 miles; Survivor group 50 miles

    • 10/7 - 9am Engineer's Gate of Central Park (90th & 5th): 9:30am West side of GWB in Fort Lee (Hudson Terrace) - Pace group 75 miles; Survivor group 50 miles
